Jiten |
Jiten is a freeware Japanese and English dictionary program.
It provides an on-screen dictionary for Japanese and English using the Edict dictionary file coordinated by
Professor Jim Breen at Monash University in Australia.
Words can be translated from Japanese to English and vice versa; alternative translations are given where applicable and the program includes a dictionary browser facility. Word entry is in Kanji/Kana, Romaji, or English and results of searches are displayed in Kanji/Kana, Romaji, and English; it is not necessary to be able to read Kanji/Kana to be able to use the program. Jiten is provided with the Edict file from 1998. The latest version of Edict is available from http://ftp.edrdg.org/pub/Nihongo/00INDEX.html (under the name edict.zip in the Datafiles - A: Dictionary Files section). Jiten was originally designed to be able to take advantage of updates to Edict as these became available; these, however, are now so large that only the smaller edict_sub.zip sub-set on the site will work. (Click here for a version of Jiten which uses a 2022 Edict_sub file.) [Jiten, in versions with and without the 1998 Edict file, is also available (as of September 2022) on the same page (under the names JitenF.zip and JitenC.zip in the Sofware - L: Miscellaneous Computers section).]
The program requires an Acorn computer with Risc OS 3, 4Mb RAM, 4Mb of hard drive space, and a colour monitor with a resolution of at least 800x600 (preferably 1024x768 or better).

forming correct text paragraphs for transfer to a text editor or DTP program.
